Planning your first trip in a home on wheels? Good. Caravanning is real freedom, close to nature, and hard to forget. A few basic habits keep the trip calm. Here is how to prepare the first route.
1. Pack with a plan, and use soft bags. Storage in a camper is generous, but it has limits. Leave hard flight cases at home and use soft sports bags or rucksacks. They fold away once you unpack. Take melamine plates instead of heavy glass, and non-slip mats for the drawers.
2. Learn the vehicle before you leave. At handover the Kowal Campers team always gives a proper briefing. Ask questions. Be sure you know how to empty the toilet cassette, where to fill fresh water, how to plug in 230V on a campsite, and how the main control panel in the living area works.
3. Plan the route, and leave room to change it. Freedom is the point of travelling by camper. Have an outline, and in high season book the key campsites ahead. Keep a margin: if a place on the way is worth it, stay longer.
4. Apps are the best co-driver. Install caravanning apps (for example Park4Night, Campercontact). They help you find safe overnight spots - campsites, camper parks or legal wild pitches - and service points where you can dump grey water and empty the toilet.
5. Change how you drive, and enjoy the road. A camper is taller, wider and heavier than a car. Watch height limits on bridges, underpasses and car-park entries, mind the rear overhang on tight turns, and leave a longer braking distance. On a camper trip the road matters as much as the destination - slow down and look.
